How Medical Cannabis
Access Works in Thailand.

Thailand allows cannabis within a medical, regulated framework. This guide explains that framework in plain terms — the controlled-herb status, the role of the licensed practitioner, and the path from consultation to prescription at a licensed clinic in Chiang Mai.

Medical-Only Access

Cannabis in Thailand is organised around medical and regulated use rather than recreational use. Legal access is intended to take place through qualified, licensed channels, with a licensed practitioner involved in the decision. The framework is built around documentation, oversight, and accountability — not over-the-counter sale.

Controlled-Herb Status

Cannabis is treated as a controlled herb under Thai regulation. In practice this means it sits within a defined legal category that emphasises medical purpose, recordkeeping, and the involvement of licensed professionals and licensed premises. Treehouse operates as a licensed clinic inside this regulated system.

Licensed Clinics & Practitioners

Because access is medical, the people and places involved matter. A licensed practitioner conducts the consultation and evaluation, and a licensed clinic is where the in-person steps take place. Credentials such as licensing, and standards like GACP and GMP across the wider supply chain, are central to how the regulated system is designed to work.

STEP 01

Consultation

You begin with a consultation at the licensed clinic. This is a conversation with a licensed practitioner about your situation and relevant medical background. You can start the intake online before your visit.

STEP 02

Practitioner Evaluation

A licensed practitioner carries out an individual evaluation. Eligibility is a clinical decision made by that practitioner, in line with Thai medical guidelines — it is not automatic and not determined by the patient.

STEP 03

PT 33 Prescription

Where the practitioner considers it appropriate, a PT 33 prescription is issued. This is the document that records legal medical access. You can read more in our dedicated guide to the PT 33 prescription.

STEP 04

In-Clinic Steps

Any remaining steps are completed in person at the licensed Chiang Mai clinic, in line with Thai regulations and proper recordkeeping. The clinic and its qualified staff handle this part of the process.

Thailand permits cannabis within a medical and regulated framework. It is treated as a controlled herb, and legal access is intended for medical purposes through a licensed practitioner who issues a prescription. Treehouse operates as a licensed clinic within this framework.

Yes. Legal medical access is documented with a practitioner-issued prescription, commonly referred to as a PT 33. The prescription is issued after a consultation and evaluation by a licensed practitioner.

The process is: a consultation with a licensed practitioner, an individual evaluation, and, where appropriate, a PT 33 prescription, after which any in-clinic steps are completed in line with Thai regulations. Eligibility is determined solely by the licensed practitioner.

This page is general information, not medical advice. Treehouse is a licensed clinic; eligibility is determined by a licensed practitioner during your consultation.
